Well, here goes nothing!

Greetings. You find me, Readers, about to embark on the journey of my lifetime! At the leisure of President Obama, I am picking up everything I have ever known and moving across the world to Japan.

And I couldn't be more excited!

My husband, a CEC Officer for the US Navy, has been issued orders to report to MCAS Iwakuni, an American military base in Japan, near Hiroshima...and so here we go! The timing couldn't be better because I am just finishing my bachelor's degree program and, with Nick having finished his last May, we are now ready to walk hand-in-hand as grown-ups into the real world. The "Far East" is about to be known as our backyard!

About the Title

Can anyone guess where I drew the inspiration for my blog title? The tagline probably gives it away to most of you...

For those of you who didn't guess, it's from the John Mellencamp song "Jack and Diane" (and I have thoughtfully provided a link to the song on YouTube here since it will now be stuck in your head every time you read my blog).

The story goes like this: I heard the song on the radio while I was mulling over the idea of starting a blog and the opening lines, "Little ditty about Jack and Diane, 2 American kids growin' up in the heartland" all of a sudden seemed to be the story of my life. You know how songs can do that sometimes? So I found myself thinking:
"Oh my gosh! It's me and Nick! We're two American kids growing up in Minnesota, which is like the Heartland, right?" Only when I heard it this past winter, I was facing the start of my last semester of undergrad and the thought of leaving MN, the only place I have ever called home, or even known as home for that matter. So my next thought was:
"Well, except we're pretty much grown up now. And won't be in the Heartland much longer. But, man, do I love America."

Shortly after that car ride, I made up my mind to start a blog. Heck, I didn't (and still don't really) know the first thing about 'blogging.' But like many things, you have to start with a name. This was somewhat of a problem because those who know me know I am not the most creative of people; I'm far too left brained for that nonsense. So I've been thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and I haven't come up with anything better...or really ANYthing else for that matter.  And now it's stuck.

So there you have it, folks. Just 2 American Kids, all grown up and leaving the heartland of good ol' Minnesota.
